America’s Future Held in an Accusation

This week is an important one in the future of the United States’ history as the Senate Judiciary Committee and the lawyers of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, the woman accusing Judge Brett Kavanaugh of sexualling assualting her, arrived at Thursday, September 27, as the date for Dr. Blasey to testify. After Charles Grassley, the Republican chairman of the Judiciary Committee, set a deadline at 2:30 P.M. on Saturday, September 22, for Dr. Blasey to decide whether she would appear on Monday for Kavanaugh’s nomination as Supreme Court Justice, an apparent agreement was created to give Dr. Blasey more time. In a tweet from late Friday night directed to Kavanaugh, Chuck Grassley said, “Judge Kavanaugh[,] I just granted another extension to Dr[.] Ford to decide if she wants to proceed w[ith] the statement she made last week to testify to the senate[.] She sh[ou]ld decide so we can move on[.] I want to hear her[.] I hope [yo]u understand. It’s not my normal approach to b[e] indecisive.”

Dr. Blasey’s accusations are on a slippery slope due to Leland Keyser, one of her key witnesses from the high school party where the assault was believed to have taken place. Keyser claims she has no memory of Judge Kavanaugh ever attending a party with her during their high school years in the 1980’s. Although, in an interview with the Washington Post, Keyser reveals she was, in fact, close friends with Blasey and believes her story.

In light of the situation, the organization, NARAL, has planned a national walkout and moment of solidarity for Monday, September 24, at 11 A.M. central time. Wearing black and using #BelieveSurvivors, they plan to stand in support Dr. Christine Blasey as well as survivors of sexual assault, abuse, and rape.

In the upcoming days, significant decisions will be made towards the future of politics and law-making within America. The outcome of this next week may result in the removal of a perpetrator from nomination as a Supreme Court justice or leave an innocent man scarred, crippling the “Me Too” movement in the process. One thing for certain, the eventual conclusion will be one not forgotten.
