Breast Cancer Awareness Month

One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at one point in their lifetime. Breast cancer typically affects women ages 40 and up. Getting a mammogram alone reduces the total number of fatalities from breast cancer by 30-40%. Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) is an international health campaign organized by numerous breast cancer oriented charities. Throughout the month of October, individuals come together to raise money for those battling this disease. Parkland Health Center, across from the High School in Farmington, offers reduced prices on mammograms during BCAM, for those who do not have insurance.
On Friday, October 19, Farmington High School’s football team played Central High School for the first time in three years. Farmington and Central being rivals in every sport, it was special to see the two teams coming together to raise money for BCAM. Central’s cheerleaders went into the stands during halftime, and passed pink helmets through the stands, collecting money for one minute. Both school’s football teams and cheerleaders were wearing pink socks to support the cause.
